Judge: Jolie didn't plagiarize 'Blood and Honey'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A federal judge says actress Angelina Jolie didn't steal the story for her movie "In the Land of Blood and Honey" from a Croatian author.

City News Service reports Friday's tentative ruling in Los Angeles will throw out the suit accusing Jolie of copyright infringement.

In 2011, author James Braddock sued Jolie and the film company that made the film, saying it was partly based on his book "The Soul Shattering."

U.S. District Judge Dolly M. Gee wrote in a tentative ruling that the plots, characters and themes in the two works were not "substantially" similar, though both centered on war romances.

Jolie wrote, directed and co-produced the film.

Braddock has been ordered to tell the court why his complaint should not be dismissed with prejudice.

Navy identifies SEAL killed in Arizona training accident

PHOENIX (Reuters) - The U.S. military on Saturday identified the elite Navy SEAL who died in a parachute training accident in southern Arizona that also injured another SEAL.

Navy officials said Special Warfare Operator Chief Brett Shadle, 31, of Elizabethville, Pennsylvania, was killed in the free-fall training accident near Pinal Airpark, northeast of Tucson, on Thursday.

Shadle was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit, the Navy said in a statement. The second SEAL, who has not been identified, remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The office of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said Shadle was a highly decorated member of SEAL Team 6 and had served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Members of SEAL Team 6 carried out the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May 2011.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Brewer said in a statement that Shadle died after colliding with another SEAL in midair. She ordered flags at all state buildings be flown at half-staff on Saturday.

SEAL is an acronym for sea, air, land.

MSI Slidebook S20 review: MSI's flagship Windows 8 Ultrabook has a flawed design

MSI Slidebook S20 review: MSI's flagship Windows 8 Ultrabook has a flawed design

If you've been following our reviews of Windows 8 laptops, you know we haven't been too kind to the slider form factor. It's not like we set out to pan these machines, but time and again we've found that the propped-up display ruins the typing experience. Keep that in mind as we begin our review of the Slidebook S20, MSI's flagship Win 8 device, priced at $1,200 in the US. It's a bold move from a company whose bread and butter is not ultraportables, but gaming systems. In fact, the 11.6-inch S20 is the outfit's only high-end Windows 8 Ultrabook. So the company must have quite a bit of confidence in that form factor, then, if it didn't bother with dockable tablets or some other kind of convertible design. Could that mean the S20 has something all the others don't?

Foster Parents Anywhere?: There is an Intruder at my House

There is someone extra living at my house. ?I am embarrassed to say that I did not notice this fact until several days after she moved in. ?When she arrived, she was hidden among a group of four other teenagers. ?Some of those left and she spent the night here. ?At my house, teenagers tend to come and go often. ?Most of them know that they are welcome to grab a bite to eat and hang out for awhile. ?As a result, I am never quite sure who is staying and who is just visiting. ?When this young lady showed up in my kitchen on Tuesday morning when no one else was home, I started asking questions. ?By this time, I was pretty sure that she had spent the night on Sunday and Monday.

It is now Friday (and she is still here) and I have gotten the full story. ?According to her, she is taking a break from her family. ?According to her mother, she has run away from home. ?According to the parents at the bus stop this morning, I should stop feeding teenagers and they may stop hanging out! ?So here I am wondering how I got dragged into this situation that I do not really want to be in. ?I have known this girl's family for many years and I count them as good friends. ?This puts me in a very sticky situation. ?I do not want to interfere with or judge my friend's parenting style. ?I do not want to enable this girl to hide from her issues. ?I absolutely to do not want another child to support and take care of. ?The five children of my own keep me busy enough.

I asked the parents at the bus stop this morning why teenagers in trouble always land at my house. ?One Mom pointed out that my own teenagers are the ones bringing them home. ?I thought that was very interesting and also true. ?My kids do this a lot. ?It is not unusual for one of them to ask if someone can spend the night or join us for dinner for concerning reasons. ?I am always surprised that my children are compassionate people. ?As I look back, I believe it is because they have learned so much from having foster children in our home. ?Foster children come with horrific stories from their pasts and I guess my children were listening and learning. ?I did not go into foster care planning on turning my biological kids into better people but it is a very nice side effect.

The other reason teenagers end up at my house is because of the food. ?I will sheepishly admit that I an extreme couponer and have been for years. ?As a result, my cupboards are very will stocked with teenager food. ?The only requirement I ask of someone sampling my stockpile is a guess on how much I paid for a particular item. ?I live for the moment that I can say, "it was free!!!!" ?The kids love this and it often turns into a mini episode of the Price is Right. ?Again I have experienced an unexpected side effect to my coupon habit. ?My children's friends like to be at my home because of the food. ?This allows me to get to know them and understand who my children choose as friends. ?As most parents will tell you, I would rather have my kids and their friends at my house than somewhere where I have to worry about them.

I am not sure what I am going to do about the fugitive living in my house yet beyond encouraging this young lady to talk about her situation. ?Sometimes a friend can offer advice that a child will listen to when they won't listen to a parent. ?That is all I have at the moment. ?In the meantime, she is doing a little housework and some laundry to earn her keep. ?I will keep you posted.

For the love of Joffrey! Stars dish on 'Thrones'

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Forget young love. On HBO's "Game of Thrones," there are just "tactical relationships," Sophie Turner, who plays long-suffering Sansa Stark, told The Clicker at the show's season three premiere in Seattle.

Helen Sloan / HBO

Margaery (Natalie Dormer) gets to know her king, Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), a bit better on season three of "Game of Thrones."

One of those strategic pairings is that of boy-king Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell. In the season two finale, the little tyrant on the Iron Throne broke his engagement to poor Sansa and made Margaery his new betrothed to bring Houses Tyrell and Baratheon -- Lannister, really -- together.?

"(Sansa's) free of being betrothed to (Joffrey), but she's still a prisoner of his," Turner told us of the upcoming season. "It was kind of better when she was betrothed to him and she kind of had a purpose and she knew her means of escape. ... Now, she's not going to become queen, so she's just a prisoner."

As "just a prisoner," that means Joffrey may have even less reason to tone down the beatings and other public humiliations for his former betrothed.?

Not that things are going to be great for Joffrey's new queen-to-be, either. Sure, he seemed to be a bit enchanted by her in season two, but nice guy he is not.

"She's in for a nasty shock!" Natalie Dormer, who plays Margaery, told us of her character. "She has not a clue what she's getting herself into. (She's learning the) really hard way. ... The audience might know Joffrey very well after two seasons, but Margaery doesn't know him at all."

The actress wouldn't reveal if Margaery will suffer the same abuse as Sansa, but explained why she'll stick around regardless of what she might go through.

"(Margaery's) ultimate goal is to be queen," Dormer said of the character, who was previously married to the now deceased King Renley. "She wants her son to be on the Iron Throne. When people ask who's going to get on the Iron Throne, Margaery's answer is, 'My son.' That's what she's aiming for. That's what the Tyrells are aiming for. Their way to power and control of Westeros is through heritage, their offspring."

But unlike Sansa, Margaery will have loved ones close by to help her navigate the power-hungry and sometimes cruel Lannisters.

"The Tyrells are a very close family, very loyal," Dormer said, and they'll all show up at court to figure out how to best play the game of thrones against the Lannisters. "We're trying to be politically savvy, but we're trying to not do it in a way that gets our hands too dirty because we want to have the moral high ground, whereas the Lannisters are right down there in the dirt with all their tricks!"

Leading House Tyrell will be Margaery's grandmother, Lady Olenna Redwyne (Diana Rigg), better known as the Queen of Thorns for her wit and sharp tongue. (Think "Downton Abbey's" Dowager Countess in Westeros.) According to Dormer, Olenna is going to prove to be quite the foe for Lena Headey's Queen Cersei.

"The Queen of Thorns is going to outmaneuver Cersei, and if you watch season three, you'll see her do it!" Dormer teased. "We had so much fun shooting these scenes!"

Season three of "Game of Thrones" premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Robotic ants successfully mimic real colony behavior

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Scientists have successfully replicated the behaviour of a colony of ants on the move with the use of miniature robots, as reported in the journal PLOS Computational Biology. The researchers, based at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark, USA) and at the Research Centre on Animal Cognition (Toulouse, France), aimed to discover how individual ants, when part of a moving colony, orient themselves in the labyrinthine pathways that stretch from their nest to various food sources.

The study focused mainly on how Argentine ants behave and coordinate themselves in both symmetrical and asymmetrical pathways. In nature, ants do this by leaving chemical pheromone trails. This was reproduced by a swarm of sugar cube size robots, called "Alices," leaving light trails that they can detect with two light sensors mimicking the role of the ants' antennae.

In the beginning of the experiment, where branches of the maze had no light trail, the robots adopted an "exploratory behaviour" modelled on the regular insect movement pattern of moving randomly but in the same general direction. This led the robots to choose the path that deviated least from their trajectory at each bifurcation of the network. If the robots detected a light trail, they would turn to follow that path.

One outcome of the robotic model was the discovery that the robots did not need to be programmed to identify and compute the geometry of the network bifurcations. They managed to navigate the maze using only the pheromone light trail and the programmed directional random walk, which directed them to the more direct route between their starting area and a target area on the periphery of the maze. Individual Argentine ants have poor eyesight and move too quickly to make a calculated decision about their direction. Therefore the fact that the robots managed to orient themselves in the maze in a similar fashion than the one observed in real ants suggests that a complex cognitive process is not necessary for colonies of ants to navigate efficiently in their complex network of foraging trails.

"This research suggests that efficient navigation and foraging can be achieved with minimal cognitive abilities in ants," says lead author Simon Garnier. "It also shows that the geometry of transport networks plays a critical role in the flow of information and material in ant as well as in human societies."

Chew on this: Sexiest stars eat what you eat

By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

If you ever wanted six-pack abs on your way to being named the Sexiest Man Alive, or if you crave the toned legs and flat belly of an international pop superstar, a trip to your nearest fast-food establishment may be in order.

Startracks, FameFlynet

Ryan Reynolds, left, gets his Burger King on during a break from filming in New York this week. Britney Spears grabs KFC to go in Thousand Oaks, Calif., on March 19.

If that doesn't make sense, than neither does Ryan Reynolds walking down the street with Burger King to go, or Britney Spears hauling a bag of KFC across a parking lot. We know stars are supposed to be "just like us," but have you seen us? We don't look like them.

Let's just assume that Reynolds and Spears ate whatever was in those bags. Instead of collapsing into a cheeseburger coma in front of "South Park," it's safe to say these two burned it off. Probably before the bags hit the trash.

No Coke. Pepsi. Actress Denise Richards at Arby's.

Celebs with six-packs under their shirts and not in their shopping carts get that way thanks to a strict diet-and-exercise routine. And there's a good chance that both of those disciplines are maintained under the watchful eye of well-paid personal chefs and trainers. It also doesn't hurt to go the "kale and dust" route if fitting into a catsuit is in your job description.

So those of you envisioning looking like any of these people because you eat at the same drive-thru, take note. Joy Bauer, nutrition and health expert for TODAY, says "limit fast food outings to once per week, and alternate fattening fare with healthier offerings like grilled chicken salads, turkey burgers, and snack wraps."

If the thought of a snack wrap taking the place of your bacon-double sounds unappetizing, Bauer crunches some numbers for you.

She says to pay penance for a Burger King Whopper (630 calories), large fries (500 calories), and?40-ounce soda (380 calories) -- totaling 1,510 calories -- you would have to:

  • run for 2 hours straight, or
  • swim for 4 hours, or
  • bike for 2 hours, or
  • play full-court basketball for 2 hours

INFphoto.com

Rihanna hits the drive thru at a fast food joint in her native Barbados.

If you scarf down KFC's Original Recipe chicken-thigh value box (540 calories), a side of mashed potatoes with gravy (120 calories), and?30-ounce sweetened iced tea (260 calories) -- totaling 920 calories -- you'd need to:?

  • spin for one hour and 10 minutes, or
  • walk for 3 hours, or
  • hit the dance floor and boogie down for an hour and a half, or
  • do yoga for 5 hours straight!

"Celebs have cravings just like everyone else ... and when they succumb to fast food faves -- just like us mortals -- they must work hard to burn off the calorific splurges," Bauer says.

Maybe you're burning calories right now at the thought of Ryan Reynolds burning calories to work off his Whopper. Maybe the thought of his wife, Blake Lively, in a swimsuit is enough to motivate him to stay in shape. We know she'd never eat ... aw, forget it!

Who's making a food run?

Ex-chancellor Schroeder praises political rival Merkel

BERLIN (Reuters) - In a gesture all too rare in election years, former chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has lavished praise on his successor and political adversary Angela Merkel for "leading with restraint" in Europe.

In an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, Schroeder complimented Merkel on the way she had not ducked away from leading Europe through the euro zone crisis now, though he said her initial hesitation several years ago made the single currency's rescue efforts more expensive than they had to be.

Schroeder, a former leader of the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) who ruled from 1998 to 2005, said some members of Merkel's conservative party had needlessly raised fears in Europe about German leadership, such as her parliamentary floor leader Volker Kauder who last year said "Europe speaks German".

Schroeder, who has endorsed the SPD chancellor candidate in the race against Merkel in September elections, said she was now doing a decent job.

"Mrs Merkel rather belatedly made the necessary decisions on rescue efforts and for solidarity in the EU," Schroeder said. "That certainly made the euro rescue efforts more expensive. But she hasn't rejected Germany's leadership role; rather she is leading with restraint. And to my mind that's a good thing."

Germany, the largest economy in Europe and the euro zone's paymaster, is sometimes criticized for not showing enough leadership. But at other times it is admonished for throwing its weight around too much - most recently during the Cyprus crisis.

"As chancellor I had to learn that Germany can only lead in Europe the same way porcupines mate," Schroeder said. When asked how porcupines mate, Schroeder replied: "Very carefully."

He added: "The other countries expect Germany to lead, but not to show off superiority. Comments like 'Europe speaks German' are not helpful at all."

Because of its military past and the two world wars it started in the 20th century, Germany has long been reluctant to lead. Many European countries also bristle at German leadership.

Luxembourg's foreign minister accused Germany on Tuesday of "striving for hegemony" in the euro zone by telling Cyprus what business model it should pursue. Germany insisted that wealthy depositors in Cyprus' banks contribute to the island's bailout.

Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn told Reuters that Germany did not have the right to make decisions for other countries and accused it in an interview with Reuters of "striving for hegemony, which is wrong and un-European."

The 68-year-old Schroeder, who has largely stayed away from politics since leaving office eight years ago but has begun to comment more frequently on issues again ahead of September's election, said more was being demanded of Germany now because of its economic clout and growing political importance.

Obama wishes Mandela well, calls him an inspiration

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama sent his best wishes on Thursday to former South African President Nelson Mandela, who is being treated in a hospital for a recurring lung infection, and called the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader an inspiration.

"He is as strong physically as he's been in character and in leadership over so many decades, and hopefully he will ... come out of this latest challenge," Obama told reporters at the White House while meeting with four visiting African leaders.

"When you think of a single individual that embodies the kind of leadership qualities that I think we all aspire to, the first name that comes up is Nelson Mandela. And so we wish him all the very best," Obama said.

Mandela, who was imprisoned for 27 years by South Africa's apartheid government, became the nation's first black president in 1994 and stepped down five years later. Obama is the first black president of the United States.

Obama made his remarks after meeting with leaders from Sierra Leone, Senegal, Malawi, and Cape Verde. Obama said they discussed how Washington could continue to partner effectively with each country.

Met Office advice was 'not helpful'

The Met Office has admitted issuing advice to government that was "not helpful" during last year's remarkable switch in weather patterns.

Between March and April 2012, the UK experienced an extraordinary shift from high pressure and drought to low pressure and downpours.

But the Met Office said the forecast for average rainfall "slightly" favoured drier than average conditions.

The three-month forecast is said to be experimental.

It is sent to contingency planners but has been withheld from the public since the Met Office was pilloried for its "barbecue summer" forecast in 2009.

Last spring's forecast has been obtained by BBC News under Freedom of Information.

?Start Quote

The probabilistic forecast can be considered as somewhat like a form guide for a horse race?

End Quote Met Office

The Met Office three-monthly outlook at the end of March stated: "The forecast for average UK rainfall slightly favours drier than average conditions for April-May-June, and slightly favours April being the driest of the three months."

A soul-searching Met Office analysis later confessed: "Given that April was the wettest since detailed records began in 1910 and the April-May-June quarter was also the wettest, this advice was not helpful."

In a note to the government chief scientist, the Met Office chief scientist Prof Julia Slingo explains the difficulty of constructing long-distance forecasts, given the UK's position at the far edge of dominant world weather systems.

She says last year's calculations were not actually wrong because they were probabilistic.

The Met Office forecast that the probability that April-May-June would fall into the driest of five categories was 20-25%, whilst the probability it would fall into the wettest was 10-15% (The average probability would be 20%).

The Met Office explained it this way: "The probabilistic forecast can be considered as somewhat like a form guide for a horse race.

'Unsolved challenges'

"It provides an insight into which outcomes are most likely, although in some cases there is a broad spread of outcomes, analogous to a race in which there is no strong favourite. Just as any of the horses in the race could win the race, any of the outcomes could occur, but some are more likely than others."

It said: "The creation of the three-monthly outlook relies upon the fact that weather is influenced by the slow variation of ocean conditions (and other processes) which can be predicted months in advance.

"Whilst there is a very strong dependence of tropical weather on processes such as El Nino ,the UK's weather is dominated by the highly variable atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic, making it much harder to predict what will happen weeks and months ahead."

In the case of last spring, Prof Slingo says the forecast may have been pushed awry by a little-understood climate phenomenon, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) - a pattern of thunderstorms that starts in the Indian Ocean. The Met Office calls it "one of the great unsolved challenges of tropical meteorology".

The irregular phenomenon is an envelope of thunderstorms starting in the Indian Ocean and moving into the Pacific. The MJO concentrates tropical rainfall within the envelope, with blue skies around it.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Prof Slingo also said a serious pressure on water resources in March did mean a "slightly enhanced risk" of the drought continuing into April.

"I felt it was right to emphasise the risk of dry conditions continuing as a precautionary principle," she added.

"We have to look over a large number of events and I think on about 65% of occasions we do give indeed very helpful advice."

Thunderstorm activity

Nick Klingaman from Reading University says that, as it moves east, the MJO influences monsoon rainfall in Australia, India, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.

These "bursts" and "breaks" in the monsoon cause floods and droughts that impact agriculture, river systems and infrastructure. The "long arm of the MJO" even extends into the middle latitudes.

"The thunderstorm activity generates waves in the atmosphere that move toward the poles," he told me. "The position of the MJO today has been shown to influence the position of the Pacific and Atlantic jet streams 10-15 days later."

He says the MJO can be an important predictor of the state of the North Atlantic Oscillation - which controls much of our weather in the UK - about 2-4 weeks in advance.

And that's how a thunderstorm off the coast of India might trigger a pattern of events which led to the weather switch last spring.

Some weather models can predict the MJO three weeks ahead, he said, but others struggle to predict it a week ahead.

Forecasts have greater skill when the MJO is already active. Reading University is working with the Met Office on improving MJO forecasting, he said.

A Met Office spokesman said: "The science of long-range forecasting is at the cutting edge of meteorology and the Met Office is leading the way in this research area. We are confident that long-range outlooks will improve progressively.

"Looking at the skill of these outlooks over many individual forecasts clearly shows that they provide useful advice to their specialist users more often than not."

When asked about weather predictions in the coming months Prof Slingo said the cold weather could continue into the middle of April.

She added: "Our monthly forecast favours cold conditions continuing.

"Into the summer it's much more difficult to predict but we're expecting a return to near normal conditions into May and then June but of course its important to emphasise that this is only one of a whole sequence of forecasts we give."

EPA Finds Sweet Spot to Release Controversial Gas Rule

After facing election-year delays, the Obama administration on Friday announced a controversial rule that requires cleaner gasoline.

The environmental regulation, which seeks to reduce toxic air pollution by requiring lower levels of sulfur in gasoline, had all but disappeared from the regulatory process for most of last year as President Obama sought reelection: He didn?t want to be perceived as imposing regulations that could raise prices at the pump--one of the most potent political risks a campaign can face.

The administration finally found a political sweet spot to release the rule. It?s the Friday before Easter weekend, a time when few people are paying attention to the news. Gasoline prices have fallen over the last few weeks. A month ago, the average was $3.79 per gallon, according to AAA. Today it is $3.64. And perhaps most important, the administration is releasing the rule before the 2014 midterm election season (where 20 Democratic seats are up) gets under way.

Congressional Republicans and industry groups are blasting Obama for the rule nonetheless.

?With $4 dollar a gallon gas the norm in many parts of the country, we cannot afford policies that knowingly raises gas prices,? House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., said in a statement.

Industry groups such as the American Petroleum Institute have charged that the rule could increase gas prices about 25 cents per gallon. The Environmental Protection Agency maintains that the increase will be no more than 1 cent.

Alaska congressman apologizes for using ethnic slur

By Michael O'Brien, Political Reporter, NBC News

?

Alaska Rep. Don Young, R, issued a new statement late Friday formally apologizing for his use of a slur to describe immigrant laborers.

Young, who had endured demands by Democrats and other fellow Republicans -- including House Speaker John Boehner -- to apologize for the use of the term "wetbacks" in a radio interview on Thursday, issued a statement doing just that.

Young said in a statement:

"I apologize for the insensitive term I used during an interview in Ketchikan, Alaska.? There was no malice in my heart or intent to offend; it was a poor choice of words. That word, and the negative attitudes that come with it, should be left in the 20th century,? and I?m sorry that this has shifted our focus away from comprehensive immigration reform."

Young had appeared on KRBD radio on Thursday, where he made his initial remark.

"My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes," Young said. "It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It?s all done by machine."

The 21-term congressman issued a statement that evening explaining that he meant no offense by using the ethnic slur, which he said he had learned during a childhood on farms in California.

But Republican leaders, who must repair the party's dismal image among the increasingly influential Latino voting bloc, were quick to distance themselves from Young, and demand a fuller apology.

"I don?t care why he said it ? there?s no excuse and it warrants an immediate apology," Boehner said.

Oil little changed, natural gas steady above $4

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil was little changed Thursday, while natural gas was steady a day after closing above $4 for the first time in a year and a half.

In morning trading in New York, benchmark oil for May delivery was up 12 cents to $96.70 a barrel. Oil has gained more than $4 in less than a week, driven by signs of strength in the U.S. economy.

Natural gas futures were unchanged. Wednesday's close at $4.07 per 1,000 cubic feet was the first above $4 since Sept. 14, 2011.

There are signs the U.S. is whittling away at the glut of supply that built up over the past few years and pushed natural gas prices down to 10-year lows. Data released by the Energy Department Thursday show inventories are about 27 percent below year-ago levels, although still about 4 percent above the five-year average.

The oil market was tempered by caution as Cypriot banks reopened for the first time since March 16. The banks were shut as political leaders negotiated an emergency bailout to prevent a banking collapse. The contentious deal reached Monday will force losses on bigger depositors, which many analysts have said could spark a crisis of confidence in banking across the 17 countries that use the euro.

No disturbances were reported as people across Cyprus formed long but orderly lines at ATMs and banks.

Brent crude, used to price many kinds of oil imported by U.S. refineries, was down 31 cents to $109.38 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1 cent to $3.10 a gallon.

? Heating oil was flat at $3.04 a gallon.

Sharapova beats Errani in Key Biscayne quarters

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? The grunts were long and loud in the final game, as if Maria Sharapova was pushing a couch across nearby Crandon Beach.

Trying to win the Sony Open must feel that way to Sharapova, a four-time runner-up. She returned to the semifinals Wednesday despite a patchy performance, beating Sara Errani 7-5, 7-5.

Sharapova had 57 unforced errors, including 13 double-faults, and overcame three set points in the second set.

"I made things much more difficult than they should have been," she said.

The two sets took 2? hours, and a flurry of mistakes by both players left spectators groaning. Sharapova had the last laugh, whacking a forehand winner past Errani on match point.

"She really made me work for this match," Sharapova said. "I had to dig deep ? so many opportunities, a few ups and downs. I'm definitely happy to get through another one."

Seeded No. 3, she'll play Thursday against No. 22 Jelena Jankovic, who beat No. 15 Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3.

The men's quarterfinals featured eight Europeans for the first time, and in the opening match, No. 3 David Ferrer of Spain rallied past unseeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Ferrer's opponent Friday will bracket buster Tommy Haas of Germany, who beat No. 11 Gilles Simon of France, 6-3, 6-1.

The 34-year-old Haas became the oldest man to beat a No. 1 player in a completed match in 30 years when he upset three-time champion Novak Djokovic on Tuesday night.

Sharapova faced Errani in a rematch of last year's French Open final, which Sharapova won to complete a career Grand Slam. But she has never won Key Biscayne, losing the final in 2005, '06, '11 and '12.

"I've been so close to winning," Sharapova said. "I would love to win this. I've been coming to this tournament since I was a little kid as a spectator. To be playing here, to be doing so well and getting to that stage, I sure hope I can go further this time."

Her quarterfinal took place with the stadium half empty despite postcard weather. Attendance is down about 7 percent from last year, and promoters blame the absence of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Sharapova struggled with both her first and second serves, and in the second set she lost eight consecutive service points. While she and Errani waged a series of long, entertaining baseline rallies, both were also prone to blowing easy shots.

Sharapova's superior firepower proved the difference. Serving at 4-5 in the second set, she erased three set points and held. Two games later she endured one final double-fault, then hit winners on the last two points.

Errani, seeded No. 8, fell to 0-26 against opponents ranked in the top five. She's 0-4 against Sharapova.

"It's nice to get through a match when you don't feel like you're playing your best, because you feel like you have a lot to improve," Sharapova said. "You have no choice. It's a semifinal.

"Would I have loved to play better? Of course. But some days you can't go out on the court and everything goes in and you feel great and you're playing the way you imagined to play. It just doesn't happen."

Sharapova has won 10 consecutive matches, all in straight sets. She won the Indian Wells championship this month and is bidding to become the third woman to claim that title and Key Biscayne in the same year. Steffi Graf did it in 1994 and 1996, and Kim Clijsters won both in 2005.

Sprial galaxy: Hidden depths of Messier 77 revealed

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Messier 77 is a galaxy in the constellation of Cetus, some 45 million light-years away from us. Also known as NGC 1068, it is one of the most famous and well-studied galaxies. It is a real star among galaxies, with more papers written about it than many other galaxies put together.

Despite its current fame and striking swirling appearance, the galaxy has been a victim of mistaken identity a couple of times; when it was initially discovered in 1780, the distinction between gas clouds and galaxies was not known, causing finder Pierre Mechain to miss its true nature and label it as a nebula. It was misclassified again when it was subsequently listed in the Messier Catalogue as a star cluster.

Now, however, it is firmly categorised as a barred spiral galaxy, with loosely wound arms and a relatively small central bulge. It is the closest and brightest example of a particular class of galaxies known as Seyfert galaxies -- galaxies that are full of hot, highly ionised gas that glows brightly, emitting intense radiation.

Strong radiation like this is known to come from the heart of Messier 77 -- caused by a very active black hole that is around 15 million times the mass of our Sun. Material is dragged towards this black hole and circles around it, heating up and glowing strongly. This region of a galaxy alone, although comparatively small, can be tens of thousands of times brighter than a typical galaxy.

Although no competition for the intense centre, Messier 77's spiral arms are also very bright regions. Dotted along each arm are knotty red clumps -- a signal that new stars are forming. These baby stars shine strongly, ionising nearby gas which then glows a deep red colour as seen in the image above. The dust lanes stretching across this image appear as a rusty, brown-red colour due to a phenomenon known as reddening; the dust absorbs more blue light than red light, enhancing its apparent redness.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Not too long after the Samsung Galaxy S 4 was announced, we started hearing whispers of a "miniature" version of the device -- which makes sense, given the Galaxy S III had a smaller sidekick of its own. Today, however, Bloomberg reported the unannounced device is indeed coming soon after the flagship makes its appearance at the end of April. If it follows a similar pattern to its bite-sized predecessor, it likely will be offered in Europe as a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy S 4. The device is rumored to offer a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, a 4.3-inch display and 8MP camera. Sadly, no official details were given, but we've reached out to Samsung officials for comment and will update when we receive word.

Update: Samsung pinged back with the following comment, which doesn't do much towards confirming or denying whether or not the GS 4 mini is indeed on the horizon. A spokesperson informed us: "We have not announced the product mentioned in the Bloomberg story."

Creative SEO Tip: Newsjacking - Search Engine Watch (#SEW)

newsjacking

Google is growing market share and vowing to implement more changes aimed at reducing web spam and manipulative linking. But to the average small business owner these constant changes are mystifying or even maddening. To small businesses, Google seems to be sending a consistent message: Link building, in all forms, is manipulative and bad.

But this can?t be true. We know that Google?s algorithm runs on links at the core. How can there be such a disparity between what everyone knows to be true and the message Google sends to marketers?

First Reaction: Give Up on SEO

In the face of continuing Google updates and a desire to stay ?clean,? most marketers flirt with the idea of giving up on SEO entirely and turn to PPC. PPC should be in the marketing portfolio already, as it is an excellent complement to search engine optimization.

PPC should be used for testing new keyword spaces, end-user reactions to copy, time-on-site and conversion behaviors. It is the right tool because it brings traffic quickly. But long term, PPC is expensive and estimating PPC ROI is difficult.

The next target is social media. Social media has serious media hype behind it, leading many to believe it is a viable alternative to SEO.

While social media is critical for public relations, customer service and reputation management, data strongly suggests that social media is not a great source of first-time visitors?(i.e., leads) for small businesses. Like PPC, social media is an important part of a diversified marketing strategy. And it is vital for content marketing. But it is not a silver bullet.

Second Reaction: Do SEO Faster (and More Poorly)

Faced with the realization that SEO has the strongest ROI, small business marketers often come to the conclusion that they just need to do SEO faster. Sadly, this usually means cutting corners and doing SEO more poorly.

Thin content is not a viable onsite SEO strategy. Furthermore, thin content placed in low-authority article directories does not bring strong results. Guest blog posts can be very beneficial, but not on unrelated websites. In short, link manipulation techniques that may have worked 4 years ago are now detrimental.

Avoid bad link building techniques, as Google has gotten much stronger as spotting link manipulation attempts and schemes. Don?t use spammy blog networks or buy links from shady websites. Don?t make articles without co-citation and then spin them. This is not helpful to the end-user and leaves a bad footprint in the link graph.

Final Reaction: SEO Requires Effort, Purpose and Creativity

After the dust settles (or a webmaster receives a penalty), the smart marketer starts viewing the costs associated with good SEO as a wise investment. At this point, they start to think creatively about SEO and explore the full potential of inbound marketing. They invest in building relationships while they are building links, which to the uninitiated may not even make sense. Relationships breed accountability whereas anonymity does not.

After drinking the SEO Kool-Aid, marketers recognize that their link building should be in the form of content that has real purpose and value?to the end-reader.

In short, they transform from link building SEO professionals to content marketers. They start writing for a real audience, caring about facts and statistics. The presentation of content is upgraded with relevant images and is never reused. Content is syndicated to higher-value websites now that it takes longer to procure. The end-result is stronger for end-users, and marketers invariably start to look for more creative ways to syndicate content with the hopes of something going viral.

Creative SEO Tip: Newsjacking

Newsjacking is a newer idea in SEO, but a natural extension of content marketing. While it sounds like a negative term, it is not. Newsjacking is a technique in which marketers ride existing demand associated with breaking news for exposure. In other words, smart marketers know there is extremely high demand for breaking news stories and use this to their advantage by contributing to the overall discussion.

What is newsjacking?

  • Paying attention to breaking news
  • Understanding the keywords being searched for in a particular news cycle
  • Producing high-quality, well-researched content that serves a specific demand for information
  • Syndicating content very quickly to be found when other news organizations search for sources.

Small businesses can?t newsjack any story, it has to be related to their space. But most businesses won?t have difficulty finding breaking news that somehow relates to their business.

For example, a high profile fire in a historic building could be used by a construction company to highlight the importance of local code and inspections. A bank robbery could be used by a home security company to discuss the merits of a reliable security system. In both cases, working in a natural sentence that highlights the company?s position will not be difficult.

Newsjacking is similar to content marketing in that the content comes first and the marketing second. Serve the reader?s desire for news, facts and opinion ? but use that opportunity for a branded mention and a link (yes, it is still OK to get a link when you work for it). Finally, use social media for quick dissemination and viral spread. Recognize that unlike content marketing, newsjacking is fleeting and timing is critical.

Conclusions

Regardless of the debate on Google?s effectiveness today, all agree that Google will continue to make updates to its algorithm to spot unnatural link manipulation. Smart marketers understand this trend, but don?t want to give up on SEO due to the ROI.

After exhausting PPC and social media, SEO professionals turn to high-quality, creative techniques to contribute valuable content while gaining exposure and links. Content Marketing is a well-established technique.

Newsjacking, a type of content marketing, places the emphasis on breaking news events rather than how-tos or technical Information and rides the wave of existing demand for news information to get well-earned backlinks and branded mentions.

Last human toll takers on Golden Gate Bridge replaced by machines

By Joe Rosato Jr., NBCBayArea.com

As the end of her afternoon shift collecting tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge ended, Dawnette Reed felt the tears begin to come.

She stepped out of her booth at lane three and made the walk back to the office for the last time. After 18 years collecting tolls at the bridge, her job was done.

"I always say I know customers from the [baby?s] car seat to the driver's seat," Reed said of her regular customers.

With the bridge switching to fully electronic toll collecting early Wednesday morning, the humans no longer had a place on the bridge for the first time in its more than 75 year history.

The Bridge District offered the toll takers other jobs, but Reed wasn't interested in any of them. Driving a bus? Not for her.

"I'm going to miss the customers," Reed said.

The drivers knew it was the toll takers last day. Some gave Reed flowers, cards - someone she'd never met gave her a bag of cookies.

She'd gotten to know her customers, even in the brief time it took hand over the $6 fare. They'd invited her to birthday parties and weddings.

PhotoBlog: Golden Gate toll collectors say emotional goodbye

Sometimes she saw strange things collecting tolls.

"We've had naked people come through with painted on bikinis," she laughed. "Sometimes we get naked people without paint on them."

Toll collector Jacquie Dean had 18 years on the job herself. She was angry she was being replaced by electronic gizmos and cameras that would soon photograph license plates and send drivers a bill for the toll.

Those things couldn't give directions to lost drivers, or watch out for trouble on the bridge.

"We're not obsolete, they chose to do this to us," Dean said. "They chose to have us here. They could've kept a couple lanes open."

Read more from NBCBayArea.com

The Bridge District said it would save $16 million over the next few years by replacing the toll workers.

It was only a matter of time before humans weren't needed.

"For the economic health of our organization I think it makes sense," said Kary Witt, manager of the Golden Gate Bridge. "Obviously the savings of doing this automatically, electronically as opposed to employing people, it's not avoidable."

Still, as some of the workers finished their last shifts on Tuesday and walked toward the office, some were in tears as they clutched bouquets.

Witt seemed to be choking back his own tears.

"We do lose a bit of the human touch," Witt said. "I think that's one of the things, you know, is a bit ironic."

Dean said the severance package offered to employees was disappointing. She wasn't sure what she would do next. But knew there would be another job somewhere.

She said she'd miss her co-workers the most.

"We've all gone through it together," she said, choking back sobs. "And I can say through all those tragedies in my life, this has been my normal, this is what kept me grounded."

Golds, banks pull TSX lower on weak data, Cyprus; RIM gains

By John Tilak

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index fell on Thursday, led by declines in gold shares that followed the bullion price lower and in financial stocks, as weak U.S. economic data and worries about spillover effects of the Cyprus crisis deepened investor gloom.

A rise in BlackBerry after the smartphone maker reported a surprise quarterly profit offset some of the losses.

Cypriots queued calmly at banks as they reopened on Thursday under tight controls imposed on transactions to prevent a run on deposits after the government was forced to accept a stringent EU rescue package to avert bankruptcy.

The banking crisis in Cyprus has weighed on investors for about a week, and some worry that it is an indication of shortcomings in the broader euro zone.

"Cyprus continues to be a problem. The question is, what's the fallout going to be?" said Fred Ketchen, director of equity trading at ScotiaMcLeod.

"Until there's clarification, the worries are the banking industry there will continue to struggle and have a negative effect on the market for a while," he added.

Investors also tracked data that showed a rise in U.S. jobless claims and a sluggish expansion of the U.S. economy in the fourth quarter of 2012.

"It's a mixed picture. We are in a period of stagnation" Ketchen said. "There's more negative emotion in the market than positive."

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was down 32.06 points, or 0.25 percent, at 12,667.59. Six of the 10 main sectors and the index were higher.

Financials, the index's weightiest sector, lost 0.6 percent, with Royal Bank of Canada giving back 0.8 percent to C$60.23.

The materials sector, which includes mining stocks, was down 0.5 percent, with the price of gold declining. Goldcorp Inc fell 0.6 percent to C$34.06.

Shares of BlackBerry gained 2 percent to C$15.09 and helped the information technology sector rise 0.9 percent.

"There's some relief. The attitude of the market is, maybe this is a sign of a turnaround," Ketchen said.
