After 35 Years Israel?s National Soccer Team to Compete in New York

The New York Mets of Major League Baseball?s National League have announced that New Yorkers who come out to watch the city?s annual ?Celebrate Israel Parade? up Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on June 2nd, will have another Israel-related reason to cheer.

That?s the date that has been selected for an exhibition soccer match between Israel?s national team and Honduras that will be played at New York?s Citi Field in preparation for three World Cup qualifiers that include a match against the United States.

According to a statement from the Mets, Israel will be making its first appearance in New York in 35 years. The underdog in the exhibition game, Israel?s soccer team is ranked 74th and second in Europe Group F, while Honduras, ranked 49th in FIFA, is fourth in the six-nation final round of North and Central American and the Caribbean qualifying. Tickets start at $20 and will go on sale Monday, April 15 at 10:00 a.m. at Mets.com/Soccer and (718) 507-TIXX. The New York region is home to the largest Jewish and Honduran populations outside of Israel and Honduras. More than 1.5 million Jews reside in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, while almost 100,000 Hondurans live in the New York, New Jersey and Long Island region.
